God's Own Country

Before starting this travel blog, one question kept coming to my mind: Why is Kerala called "God's Own Country"?

Like most people, I searched Google hoping to find the answer. Most explanations spoke about Kerala's breathtaking landscapes, backwaters, beaches, and the tourism campaign that made the phrase famous. While all of that is true, I felt there was something more.

To me, Kerala is truly God's Own Country because of its rich spiritual heritage.

It is home to Guruvayoor, one of the most sacred temples dedicated to Lord Krishna. According to temple tradition, the idol worshipped here was once in Dwarka during Lord Krishna's lifetime. After Dwarka was submerged, Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu brought the idol to its present location, giving the place its name—Guruvayoor.

Kerala is also blessed as the birthplace of Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya at Kalady. His life and teachings transformed Hindu philosophy. He travelled across the length and breadth of India, spread the message of Advaita Vedanta, and established the four Peethas in the four corners of the country, uniting the spiritual traditions of India.

With these thoughts in mind, I began my journey to Thrissur, Guruvayoor, and Kalady. This was more than just a trip to beautiful places—it was a journey into a land whose spiritual legacy has inspired millions for centuries.

Now, let me begin with our journey.

Day 1: The pilgrimage experience (Thrissur + Guruvayoor)

Day 2: A Divine Visit to Kalady – The Birthplace of  Sri Adi Shankaracharya

Travel Tip: A Better Itinerary Option

While planning this trip, we followed a route where we stayed in Thrissur and travelled to Guruvayoor and Kalady. Last month, when we planned a similar trip for our relatives, we modified the itinerary to make it more relaxed and convenient.

Instead of travelling back and forth to Thrissur, we suggested staying overnight at Guruvayoor. This reduces travel time and allows visitors to experience the temple in a more peaceful way.

The suggested plan was:

  • Travel from Bengaluru to Thrissur by train.
  • Pre-book a taxi from Thrissur Railway Station to Guruvayoor directly after arrival.
  • Stay overnight at Guruvayoor (ISKCON Guest House).
  • Visit Guruvayoor Temple.
  • Next day, Travel from Guruvayoor to Thrissur and visit the important temples in Thrissur.
  • Continue to Kalady, complete the visit, and return to Thrissur Railway Station.
  • Board the return train from Thrissur to Bengaluru.

Looking back, this itinerary may be a better option for families and senior citizens, as it avoids late-night check-ins and reduces unnecessary travel. Starting the temple visits early in the morning also helps avoid crowds and gives more peaceful darshan experiences.
