4 Day Temple & Nature Trip Through Malnad and Coastal Karnataka – Jog Falls, Sonda, Gokarna, Murudeshwar & Sigandur

We travelled during December 2024, and I am writing this blog now so that it may help fellow travellers who are planning a similar trip through the beautiful Malnad and coastal Karnataka region.

This was not my first visit to these places. Since childhood, my grandmother used to take me here during summer holidays. She stayed in Soraba, and many of these places hold beautiful memories for me. This trip was special because this time I travelled with my own family, including our 4-year-old child.

If you are wondering whether this schedule is hectic, honestly it did not feel too tiring. The only thing I would strongly suggest is to avoid weekends and holiday seasons to escape heavy crowds at temples and tourist places.

Day 1 – Travel from Kengeri to Talguppa

Our journey started from Kengeri Railway Station, Bengaluru. We boarded the Mysuru–Talguppa Express night train.

  • Train: Mysuru – Talguppa Express
  • Departure from Kengeri: Around 10:30 PM
  • Arrival at Talguppa: Around 6:00 AM
  • Approx Sleeper Fare: ₹250 – ₹350 per person
  • Approx 3AC Fare: ₹800 – ₹1100 per person

Talguppa is the nearest railway station for Jog Falls, which makes it very convenient for travellers coming from Bengaluru.

We had already pre-booked a taxi for the entire journey because travelling with family and a small child becomes much easier that way.

Day 2 – Jog Falls, Sirsi Marikamba Temple, Sahasralinga & Sonda Vadiraja Mutt

Jog Falls

We reached Talguppa early in the morning and directly headed towards Jog Falls. We had booked our stay at Hotel Mayura Gerusoppa near Jog Falls.

  • Hotel: KSTDC Hotel Mayura Gerusoppa
  • Approx Cost: ₹1700 - 2500 per night depending on room type and season

Honestly, we booked this hotel mainly because of its location. Our plan was not to spend much time inside the hotel. We just wanted a place to freshen up quickly and continue our journey without wasting time travelling back and forth.

When we visited, a lot of construction work was going on around the area. Still, the view of Jog Falls was breathtaking.

Jog Falls is one of the highest plunge waterfalls in India and is formed by the Sharavathi River. During monsoon, the falls become extremely powerful and beautiful. Even in December, the place had a pleasant atmosphere and misty weather.

After freshening up, we had breakfast at the hotel restaurant and spent some peaceful time enjoying the view of the falls.

Sirsi Marikamba Temple

Our next destination was Sirsi, which is around 75 km from Jog Falls.

We visited the famous Marikamba Temple, one of the most well-known temples in Uttara Kannada district. Goddess Marikamba is worshipped as a powerful form of Shakti, and the temple has a long history dating back several centuries.

Luckily, the temple was not crowded during our visit. We had a very peaceful darshana and later had lunch prasada inside the temple premises.

Annadana is offered daily at the temple, and the food was simple and satisfying.

Sahasralinga

From Sirsi, we proceeded towards Sonda. On the way, we visited Sahasralinga.

This place is extremely peaceful and beautiful. The Shalmala River here contains hundreds of Shiva Lingas carved on rocks inside the flowing water.

The history of Sahasralinga goes back to the Kadamba dynasty. It is believed that the kings and queens of the dynasty got these lingas carved as an act of devotion to Lord Shiva.

  • Distance from Sirsi to Sahasralinga: Around 17 km
  • Distance from Sahasralinga to Sonda: Around 25 km

We spent good time there enjoying the calm atmosphere before continuing towards Sonda.

Sonda Vadiraja Mutt

We reached Sonda around 6 PM and booked a room near the mutt.

Unfortunately, we had visited on Ekadashi day, so the famous Bhootharaja Pooje was not happening that day.

Still, the atmosphere of the mutt was very divine and peaceful. We visited:

  • Rama Vikrama Temple
  • Vadiraja Temple
  • Bhootharaja Sannidhi

Construction work was also going on near the temple during our visit.

Since it was Ekadashi, we had simple phalahara for dinner and rested for the night.

Day 3 – Gokarna, Honnavar Eco Beach & Murudeshwar

Early in the morning, we again visited the temple and then started our journey towards Gokarna.

  • Distance from Sonda to Gokarna: Around 110 km

We reached Gokarna around 9:30 AM and first had breakfast nearby before proceeding for darshana.

Gokarna Temple Visit

We first visited the Maha Ganapathi Temple and then proceeded to the famous Mahabaleshwara Temple.

Gokarna is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimage places dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Mahabaleshwara Temple houses the sacred Atma Linga associated with the Ramayana story involving Ravana and Lord Ganesha.

Since it was holiday season and weekend time, the crowd was huge. It took us more than one hour for darshana.

After darshana, we had annaprasada offered by the temple.

Usually many people spend time at Gokarna beaches, but since it was already afternoon and our plan was different, we continued our journey.

Eco Beach, Honnavar

Our next stop was Eco Beach at Honnavar.

  • Distance from Gokarna to Honnavar Eco Beach: Around 60 km

We reached around 4 PM. The beach was clean, calm, and very family-friendly.

There is also a very large and well-maintained kids park nearby, which our child enjoyed a lot. We spent some relaxed time at the beach before leaving for Murudeshwar.

Murudeshwar

From Honnavar, we travelled towards Murudeshwar.

  • Distance from Honnavar to Murudeshwar: Around 25 km

We had already booked Kamat Yatri Nivas near the temple.

  • Hotel: Kamat Yatri Nivas
  • Approx Cost: ₹1500 – ₹2500 per night
  • Distance from Temple: Around 500 meters to 1 km

After freshening up, we went for darshana.

Murudeshwar Temple is famous for its massive Shiva statue and beautiful temple located beside the Arabian Sea. The temple is connected to the story of the Atma Linga from Gokarna.

The evening atmosphere there was really beautiful with sea breeze and temple lights.

After darshana, we had dinner and rested for the night.

Day 4 – Sigandur, Ferry Ride, Sagara & Varadahalli

Sigandur Chowdeshwari Temple

After checkout, we started towards Sigandur.

  • Distance from Murudeshwar to Sigandur: Around 110 km

The temple was not crowded when we reached. We had taken a saree to offer to the goddess. For saree offering, tokens are issued at the temple counter.

After darshana, we attended annadana.

One thing we personally follow whenever visiting temples is having prasada meals at temple premises whenever possible. The food served with devotion has a different satisfaction altogether.

Ferry Experience

One of the highlights of the trip was getting an opportunity to travel by ferry.

The Sharavathi backwater ferry ride always gives a nostalgic feeling. Since my childhood, I have travelled through this route many times with my grandmother.

Even today, that ferry journey through the calm water and green surroundings feels very special.

Nowadays, depending on bridge and road developments, travel routes keep changing, so it is always better to check the latest local situation before planning.

Sagara & Varadahalli Sridhara Ashrama

From Sigandur, we travelled towards Sagara and checked into Hotel Souparnika.

The hotel is conveniently located on the way towards Sridhara Ashrama, Varadahalli.

After freshening up, we visited Sridhara Ashrama.

Sri Sridhara Swamiji is highly respected in this region, and the ashrama attracts devotees from many places.

The place is peaceful and surrounded by greenery. There is also Sridhara Theertha nearby. Visitors need to climb steps to reach certain sections of the ashrama, but the atmosphere makes the climb worth it.

Devotees can also offer Datta Bhiksha and other seva offerings there.

We had anna prasada at the ashrama.

Some temple meals should never be missed, and this was definitely one of them.

Sagara Marikamba Temple

After some rest at the hotel, we visited the famous Sagara Marikamba Temple and nearby temples in the evening.

The temple has deep cultural importance in the Malnad region and attracts large numbers of devotees during annual festivals.

At the end of the trip, there are two options for return travel:

  • Night train from Talguppa to Bengaluru
  • Early morning Talguppa–SBC Express the next day

We chose the second option and travelled peacefully the next morning.

Final Thoughts

That was the end of our 4-day temple and nature journey through the Malnad and coastal Karnataka side.

Whether you call it Malnad, Uttara Kannada, or coastal Karnataka, one thing is certain — this region has a unique peace that is difficult to explain in words.

The best part of this trip was that even with a 4-year-old child, the journey never felt stressful.

If you feel this itinerary is too packed, you can always extend it by one or two more days and travel at a slower pace.

But if planned properly, this route can comfortably cover temples, waterfalls, beaches, ferry rides, and peaceful nature spots within four days.

Most importantly, avoid long weekends and peak holiday crowds if you want peaceful darshana and relaxed travel.

For those planning a similar trip, the overall cost may roughly come between ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 for a family depending on hotel choice, train class, and travel style.

If you have travelled on this route before and know any other beautiful places, temples, food stops, or hidden spots that can be covered on the way, do share them in the comments. It may help fellow travellers planning a similar journey.

Hope this blog helps someone planning a similar family trip.
