✈️ Journey Begins
Our journey started early morning from Bangalore at 07:30 AM with Indigo airlines, reaching Indore around 09:15 AM. Since we had pre-booked a cab, we started towards Ujjain without any delay.
The drive was smooth with really good highways. Due to the upcoming Kumbh Mela in 2028, there were a few construction work along the way, but nothing major. We reached Ujjain around 11:30 AM.
🏨 Stay
We had booked Hotel Kusum Kunj, located about 1 km from the temple. After freshening up, we headed straight for darshan.
🔱 Mahakaleshwar Temple
Cabs don’t go all the way to the temple, so we took a tuk-tuk for the last stretch.
Mahakaleshwar is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, and it is believed to be a powerful center of energy where Shiva is worshipped as the lord of time (Mahakal). Unlike most temples, the linga here faces south, which is said to represent protection from negative forces and the cycle of life and death.
We opted for Sheeghra Darshan (₹250 per person), taken offline as we weren’t sure about our timing earlier. We reached around 1 PM, and within 10 minutes, we had darshan.
We were just one row behind Nandi, and what really stood out was how calm everything felt. There was no pushing, no rush — you actually get a moment to stand and take it in.
After the main darshan, we visited the smaller shrines within the premises — Hanuman, Narasimha, Sakshi Gopal, and Ganapathi. These temples represent protection, strength, and removal of obstacles, completing the spiritual experience around Mahakal.
We also performed Rudra Abhisheka, a powerful ritual dedicated to Lord Shiva — an experience beyond words, deeply spiritual and calming.
🍛 Anna Kshetra
After darshan, we went to the Anna Kshetra. You need to collect a free coupon, and food is unlimited.
The place was very clean and well managed. The meal was simple — dal, roti, rice, and a sweet — but it felt satisfying. It’s one of those experiences where simplicity feels complete.
🚗 Afternoon Visits
We initially planned to visit Kal Bhairav Temple, but since it was Tuesday, the crowd was quite heavy. So we decided to go the next day morning.
This temple is dedicated to Kal Bhairav, considered the guardian of Ujjain. It is believed that no visit to Ujjain is complete without seeking his blessings, as he protects the city and its devotees.
We then visited Sandipani Ashram. This is known as the place where Lord Krishna, Balarama and Sudhama studied under the guidance of Guru Sandipani. The ashram carries a quiet historical and spiritual importance, reminding you of the learning phase of Krishna’s life.
Next was Gadkalika Temple, associated with Goddess Kalika. It is believed that the great poet Kalidasa was blessed here, making it a place connected with knowledge and wisdom.
🌆 Evening at Harsiddhi Matha Temple
We reached around 5:45 PM, just in time for the evening lighting.
This temple is one of the Shakti Peethas, dedicated to Goddess Harsiddhi, a form of divine feminine energy. It is believed that parts of Sati fell here, making it a place of deep spiritual significance.
The tall lamp pillars lit up with rows of diyas create a very unique atmosphere. It’s simple, but powerful to witness. The entire space feels calm and steady.
After darshan, we also visited Bade Ganeshji Mandir nearby, known for its large idol of Lord Ganesha, symbolizing wisdom and auspicious beginnings.
🚶 Mahakal Corridor (Mahakal Lok)
We then walked through the Mahakal Corridor. The pathway, sculptures, and overall setup are beautifully done, showcasing stories and forms connected to Shiva. The statue of Vikramaditya in the Mahakal Lok Corridor honors the legendary ruler known for his wisdom and justice. There was also a laser show happening, which added a different touch to the visit.
🍽️ Dinner
We had dinner at Food Zone, where there were plenty of options available. A good place to sit and relax after the long day.
🌙 Shayan Aarti
We had pre-booked the Shayan Aarti ticket through the official website (booking opens at 4 PM for the same day).
The aarti starts at 10 PM, but it’s better to reach early. We stood in the queue by 9 PM, yet ended up around the 10th row.
The experience is something which cannot be described in words. The chants, rhythmic beats of the drums and bells, and the atmosphere — everything slowly builds and pulls you in.
✨ End of Day 1
The day ended with a sense of fulfillment. Despite visiting many places, it never felt rushed. Each temple had its own importance, and each moment felt different.
It’s not just about covering places — it’s about how the entire journey makes you feel by the end of the day.
They say you can't plan a visit to Mahakal, you only go when he calls you. Somewhere, that felt true. We felt really lucky to have experienced it this way.
